2009 North American Computational Linguistics Olympiad
The North American Computational Linguistics Olympiad (NACLO) is an
annual competition in which high school students solve linguistics problems drawn
from a variety of languages. Only logic and reasoning skills are
necessary, no prior knowledge of particular
languages or of linguistics required. You can see examples of the sort of
problems involved here.
The open round competition takes place Feb 4, 2009.
Students may participate either online, or at a contest site. This
year (for the second time), the University of Michigan is one of the
contest sites.
Those who do well in the open round are invited to participate in
a second round, and the top scoring students in the second round
will be considered for spaces on the US team that competes in the
International Linguistics Olympiad, to be held later in
the year. A US team has won gold for the last two years.
There will be a local information and practice session on Thursday, Jan 15, 2009:
5:00 pm - 6:30 pm
Room 403, Lorch Hall
Department of Linguistics, U of M
611 Tappan Street, Ann Arbor
There will be pizza and drinks.
Please send email to naclo-um2009@umich.edu
