The Graduate Program
The Department of Linguistics' doctoral program has over 20 faculty
and 30 graduate students. The program provides a broad-based approach
to linguistics as a cognitive and a social science, and is
particularly distinctive in its interdisciplinary perspective,
capitalizing on the University of Michigan's commitment to scholarship
that cross-cuts traditional disciplinary boundaries. In the 60-year
history of UM's Program, and then Department, of Linguistics, roughly
300 Ph.D.'s in Linguistics have been awarded.
