Application Materials

New students are admitted to the Ph.D. program once each year to begin in the Fall term. (The Department of Linguistics does not offer the M.A. degree.) All application materials must be received by the Department no later than December 15. More detailed information about the application process is available from Rackham Graduate School Admissions. Questions about our application process should be addressed to linggradadmissions@umich.edu.

Complete the official online Rackham Graduate Application form and send all other admission materials (outlined below) in one envelope to:

Linguistics Department
Graduate Admissions
University of Michigan
440 Lorch Hall
611 Tappan Street
Ann Arbor, MI 48109-1220

Admission materials for new students must include:

  • Completed Rackham School of Graduate Studies application;
  • Statement of Purpose;
  • Graduate Record Examination (GRE) results;
  • Personal Statement
  • Official transcripts of previous work;
  • Three letters of recommendation (plus English translations if originals are not in English);
  • Sample of written work (e.g., a term paper);
  • For students whose native language is not English, the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the Michigan Assessment Battery (MELAB) is required. Scores of at least 620 on the paper version of the TOEFL, 260 on the computer-based TOEFL, 84 on the iBT TOEFL, or 87 on MELAB are normally necessary for admission.

Application Materials for the Joint Degree Program in Linguistics and Romance Languages

Students may apply to our joint Ph.D. program either as a new student or as a student who is currently enrolled in Romance Languages at the University of Michigan.

For new students, the application package is essentially the same as that described above. However, the statement of purpose should outline the student's interests in both Linguistics and the relevant language. Copies of the application will be forwarded to the language department, which should be consulted for details. Application materials must be received prior to December 15 if the language department has an earlier deadline; applicants should check with the relevant department for their deadline.

For students already in a Rackham degree program who seek admission to a joint degree program, the application package should include:

  • Original application materials;
  • New statement of purpose describing their converging interests in linguistics and the relevant language(s);
  • Current UM transcript;
  • List of all courses taken through the Linguistics department, specifying the instructor;
  • Current letters of recommendation, including (for students who have taken UM Linguistics courses) at least one letter from a Linguistics faculty member;
  • Writing sample (preferably in linguistics).

For all students (i.e., regardless of whether applicants are external or internal to UM), application materials go to the Linguistics Admissions Committee, following the normal admissions cycle.
