This is a fantastic little (8 page) introduction to help you get started using the statistical package that all the cool kids are using:

If you were are looking to break a spreadsheet addiction, you could hardly go wrong with R and if you really just absolutely have to see your data in columns & rows be sure to add the R.utils package so you can use the data.entry() function. It’s spartan, sure, but the Spartans did pretty well for themselves for quite some time. :)
