ASL Waitlist Registration

If you are interested in registering for one or more courses in American Sign Language, please read the following information and follow the link at the bottom to fill out the registration form. Our ASL courses are popular, currently necessitating a waitlist; completion of the form automatically adds you to the list.

Selection is based on a combination of the information provided in the form (please see the criteria listed below) and the order in which you are added to the list. We appreciate your patience as we work to add more course sections in subsequent terms.

Criteria for Waitlist Selection

The following factors are considered favorably in waitlist selection:

Incoming freshmen are encouraged to put their names on the waitlist for LING 140 and LING 150. Override space for freshman may be available for LING 140, although concurrent enrollment in LING 150 is usually not available for incoming freshman.

While we continue to work to provide training in ASL to as many UM students as possible, study of ASL is not recommended for juniors who have not fulfilled the language requirement. With only four semesters remaining, any interruption in the sequence (e.g., due to a scheduling conflict) would delay graduation. (Spring/Summer ASL courses are not available at UM.)

ASL uses a gestural-visual modality, and is distinct from English and from other signed languages. Students who are successful learners of ASL are typically those who have demonstrated success in acquiring a second spoken language.
